This handbuilding class draws inspiration from nerikomi techniques to explore color and pattern in clay. We'll start by working with contrasting light and dark clay bodies to learn how to build, slice, and reassemble clay blocks, developing a few signature patterns.
As the class progresses, students will experiment with mixing oxides and mason stains into light-colored clay to create custom-colored clays and work toward more complex patterning. Using slab-building methods including slump molds, participants will transform their patterned slabs into finished objects.
Come ready to experiment! While a selection of stains will be provided, students may want to purchase additional mason stains to expand their color palette. Previous handbuilding experience required. This class is open to students brand new to nerikomi or those wanting to strengthen existing skills.
