Position: Program Assistant (part-time hourly, non-exempt)

Reports to: Executive Director

Hours: Thursday-Saturday, 10 am-6 pm

Location: Durham, NC (in-person, non-remote)

 

Claymakers is looking for a dynamic, organized Program Assistant to help support our weekly ceramics classes, coordinate special programs, and lend a hand with marketing and communications.

This is a people-centered role that’s a good fit for someone who enjoys being part of a creative, community-driven space and loves supporting artists and learners by creating inspiring experiences. You’ll work closely with our Executive Director, Studio Manager, instructors, and studio assistants to help advance Claymakers’ mission of nurturing a thriving ceramics community.

We’re looking for someone who communicates clearly, loves getting the details right, and is comfortable juggling a few things at once. Strong customer service skills and a collaborative spirit are essential. Saturdays are an important part of this role, as you’ll be at the front desk taking point running our supply store and helping keep the studio running smoothly. Some evening hours will also be needed from time to time to accommodate special programs.

Key Responsibilities:

 

1. Program Support

Weekly Classes

  • Assist the Executive Director with planning, coordinating and documenting Claymakers’ weekly ceramics classes (100+ per year).

  • Help manage class listings and registration on the website; handle student withdrawals.

  • Prepare for each session by organizing rosters and assigning student shelf space.

  • Track instructor substitutions and assist with payroll documentation.

  • Ensure instructors have the supplies and equipment they need, ordering as necessary.

Workshops & Special Events

  • Plan and execute community programs such as one-time workshops, intensives, day trips, art markets, and gatherings.

  • Coordinate event logistics, including scheduling teaching artists, communications, supply needs, and post-event follow-up.

  • Maintain internal calendars and documentation for all programs.

  • Coordinate with staff to ensure participants' work is processed and returned on time.

 

2. Communications

Marketing

  • Support marketing efforts by writing content for newsletters, flyers, website updates, and social media.

  • Capture photos and videos of classes, events, and studio life for use in communications.

  • Post events on local arts calendars and community boards as needed.

  • Assist with occasional press releases and promotional mailings.

Internal Communications

  • Maintain accurate records and help ensure smooth information flow across staff, instructors, and students.

 

3. Front Desk Support

  • Take the lead at the front desk on Saturdays, including running the supply store, ringing up sales through the register, and answering student questions as needed.

  • Provide friendly customer service in person, by phone, and by email.

  • Help keep the supply store clean and organized.

  • Respond to any incidents with basic first aid and proper reporting.

  • Assist with biannual inventory (July and December).

  • Other studio support tasks may be assigned as needed to support Claymakers’ overall operations.

Physical Requirements:

  • Capable of lifting and carrying up to 55 pounds.

  • Able to work in in environments with varying temperatures (our kiln area and clay storage are not climate-controlled).

  • Must be able to work safely with ceramic materials, and to help maintain a clean, safe environment in the studio and store.

 

Required Qualifications: 

  • At least 3 years of experience in an administrative role.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage tasks, set priorities, and maintain attention to detail.

  • Working knowledge of ceramic materials, equipment, and studio processes.

  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends for program needs.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite, with the ability to learn new applications.

  • Must pass a criminal background check.

  • CPR/first aid certification required within 3 months of hire (training will be provided by Claymakers).

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BFA or MFA in ceramics, or equivalent life experience.

  • An active ceramic arts practice.

  • Experience in community engagement and outreach.

  • Background in marketing, arts education, arts administration, or graphic design.

  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and community-building through the arts.

 

Pay and Benefits: 

  • Pay: $19/hour, paid monthly via direct deposit.

  • Benefits: paid time off, paid holidays, retirement plan eligibility, and access to studio facilities and equipment.
