Summer Intensive: Peeling the Onion: Complex Surface Design with Ronan Peterson

$150.00

Sunday, June 28th • 10am- 4pm

Instructor: Ronan Peterson

Location: Wheel Studio 2

Skill Level: All Levels Welcome

Join us for a full day of demonstrations with North Carolina potter Ronan Peterson of Nine Toes Pottery! This demonstration workshop will be a comprehensive exploration of Ronan’s exuberant surface techniques, beginning with freshly thrown forms and moving through his processes of surface decoration and glazing. Ronan will have prepared objects at every stage of his process to demonstrate upon, and will show specific techniques for slips, tera sig, waxing, and surfaces for multiple types of firings.

Ronan creates highly decorative and functional earthenware vessels inspired by natural processes. He says, “With my ceramic vessels, I hope to create a comic book interpretation of the natural world with a focus on the rocks and trees and their role in the perpetual organic comedy of growth and decay.” His vibrant pieces are produced in red clay upon which he layers slips, terra sigillatas, and glazes using wax resist patterning. Ronan has said he “hopes viewers and users get a sense that my pots could just slither away if they turn their gaze away for too long.”

Ronan was a Core Fellow at Penland School of Crafts in 2000-2001. His work has been featured in Ceramics Monthly, Clay Times, and the books 500 Bowls and 500 Plates and Chargers. Recent exhibitions include solo shows at the Cedar Creek Gallery (NC) and Charlie Cummings Gallery (FL) and invitational shows at the Northern Clay Center, Akar Gallery Yunomi Invitational 2020, Worcester Center for Crafts in Worcester, MA, and the Carbondale Clay Center in Carbondale, CO.

This is a demonstration-only workshop: students will not be handling clay or glaze during the demonstration. There will be a 1-hour break for lunch. Students can bring a lunch or order food from a nearby restaurant— Claymakers will provide suggestions. This workshop is for students ages 18+ .
