Thursday Evenings, 6:30- 9:30 pm
Class Dates: February 26; March 5, 12, 19, 26; April 2, 9
Instructor: Gaines Bailey
Location: Wheel Studio 2
Skill Level: Intermediate, Advanced
Step beyond the predictability of electric kilns and explore the dynamic surfaces of Cone 6 gas reduction firing. This class introduces the fundamentals of firing in a reduced atmosphere and the unique glaze and clay interactions that result. Students will work with a sampler pack of stoneware and porcelain clays, allowing for direct comparison of how different bodies respond to reduction.
Demonstrations will focus on form, surface, and glaze pairing—what works best, and why—along with application techniques suited to atmospheric firing. Two firings are included: an initial firing in week three to observe results, followed by a final firing in week 6 to refine and apply what you’ve learned. A previous wheel class is required.
