Tuesday Mornings, 10am - 1pm
Class Dates: February 24; March 3, 10, 17, 24, 31; April 7
Instructor: Jessica Sandford
Location: Wheel Studio 1
Skill Level: Intermediate, Advanced
Inspired by a summer session at Penland with Shoko Teruyama, this class focuses on creating playful, expressive surfaces through sgraffito decoration. Students will apply slip, then inscribe, incise, and later, layer color into the surface. Jessica will guide you in working with darker clays and white slip—carving and scratching into the surface, then finishing pieces with candy-like, color-tinted glazes applied in a coloring book style.
The first half of the session will be making-intensive, with an emphasis on producing strong forms for surface decoration. In the final weeks, we'll slow down to focus on sgraffito and glazing work. Students are encouraged to bring their favorite sgraffito tools, glazing brushes, and fan brushes—Jessica will also have tools on hand for you to explore and find what works best for you.
