Summer Intensive: Porcelain: Texture & Surface Embellishment with Gillian Parke

$325.00

Sunday, August 9th & Monday, August 10th • 10am- 4pm

Instructor: Gillian Parke

Location: Wheel Studio 2

Skill Level: Intermediate & Advanced

In this two-day hands-on workshop, Gillian Parke will share insights of her highly decorative, multi-fired textural artworks. Students will learn how to mix inclusions into porcelain in order to alter its surface and texture, and will then use their two porcelain bodies to create a thrown and altered vessel. Gillian will demonstrate how to avoid the challenges of joining two clay bodies, and students will try their hand at applying overglaze decals. Gillian will also share details of her entire process, which includes gold luster, underglazes, decals, multiple firings, and several types of inclusions.

Gillian Parke is known for her ornate surfaces that combine traditional European approaches to porcelain with Japanese Shigaraki and Imari wares. She approaches her work from a historical perspective, connecting porcelain objects with collectable heirlooms. However, she also challenges notions of kitsch and craft often pigeonholed as feminine hobbies. She says the works “illustrate the contrasts in aesthetics, forms, traditions, and function found between Japanese pottery and European fine porcelain.” And her work “gives a more visceral and textured surface not often associated with porcelain.”

Gillian was born in Coleraine, Northern Ireland, and grew up in Weymouth, MA. She graduated from Boston University with a BA in chemistry, and now lives in Durham where she has a ceramics studio. She was chosen by Ceramics Monthly Magazine as one of 13 Emerging Artists in 2008, featured as a cover artist in the February 2009 issue, and has written for Pottery Illustrated Magazine. Her work is in numerous public and private collections including the San Angelo Museum of Art and the Mint Museum in Charlotte, NC.

This is a hands-on two day workshop: all necessary materials will be provided, but students should plan to bring their own tools. There will be a 1-hour break for lunch. Students can bring a lunch or order food from a nearby restaurant— Claymakers will provide suggestions. This workshop is for students ages 18+
