Session 6: Introduction to Crystalline Glazes, Wednesday evenings
Introduction to Crystalline Glazes, Wednesday evenings
Macrocrystalline glazes, usually just called crystalline, are a category of glazes in which large, visible crystal clusters are cultivated in the surface of low alumina glazes “seeded” by zinc, titanium, or lithium. The nature of the glazes requires specific preparations for firing and finishing work, and development of a precise firing schedule. In this class, students will learn about the interactions of the glaze materials and methods for testing and evaluating them by mixing and firing tests at Cone 6. Students will then mix glazes and prepare a small group of pieces for firing to Cone 10. All students will be working with porcelain, and a porcelain and materials fee is included in the class fee. Intermediate/Advanced.
