Fall 2020 Firing Workshop: Raku
Fall 2020 Firing Workshop: Raku
Instructor: Gaines Bailey
Sunday, November 22: 10 am-4 pm
Join instructor Gaines Bailey for a raku-packed Sunday! Raku firing is a fast-paced, exciting firing method that can be used to create unpredictable ceramic surfaces. Work is removed from the kiln while it is still glowing hot and put into reduction chambers. This results in beautiful, uniquely varied surfaces due to the oxygen-deprived atmosphere.
Participants can bring up to 10 pieces to be fired; we'll be doing firings for glazed, naked, and horsehair raku. Because of limited kiln space, bring pieces no wider than 8". All pieces must be created in an appropriate clay body and bisqued to Cone 06. All glazes, terra sigillatas, and slips will be provided. (Please remember that raku-fired pottery should not be used for food and drink! Students should not plan to fire serving cups, bowls, etc.)
We'll break for lunch as time allows--students should bring their own lunches to eat outside.
Due to Claymakers' move, the last day for pickup of finished work will be Saturday, November 28. All work left after this time will be discarded.
Note: All students must follow Claymakers' COVID protocol and sign a COVID waiver.
Safety: All participants must wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants (cotton only, no synthetic materials) and closed-toe shoes. We will provide gloves and heat shields for those who choose to pull pieces from the kilns. All participants must sign a liability waiver on the morning of the workshop.
