It brings me great pleasure to present Steinfest, an annual, national exhibition featuring the German beer stein. I am honored to present this diverse group of nationally and regionally known artists who have approached this form in unique and individual ways.
Steinfest artists have come from 25 states and Canada, and more than half live outside of North Carolina. The exhibition brings together artists whose styles, techniques, and processes represent the full spectrum of applications in clay. Known for their excellence in craftsmanship and interpretations in clay, Steinfest artists have elevated the simple beer container to new heights and unexpected directions. They exemplify the transformation of matter into art. Why focus on the beer stein? Durham is the local food movement writ large. An extension of that movement is to recognize the artists and craftspeople that are creating forms that showcase this food. There is nothing like handling an object created by hand and then drinking from that object. Handcrafted objects are good for the economy as well as the soul. Gillian Parke, Steinfest Curator |
